Huntsville Founding and Early History
Huntsville was founded in 1805 as a cotton-trading settlement by John Hunt and became Alabama's first incorporated city in 1811. For its first century it was an agricultural and textile center, earning early nicknames tied to its watercress springs before the mid-20th century transformed it into Rocket City.
